Savinnah: I learnt life lessons from skating in town

Savinnah is a 22-year-old singer, songwriter from Kenya. She’s a baddie with feelings. A pop girlie who’s confident and knows what she wants but isn’t afraid to show her emotions and tell you how she really feels. Being quite a newbie in the music industry, Savinnah has her debut studio album ‘Pardon Me’ out already.

The EP is an introductory project for her into the music industry. Most of the songs in this project revolve around the feeling of infatuation when you meet a new love interest and even form a new deep connection.

“I’ve loved music for as long as I can remember. My earliest memory of singing goes as far back as when I was 4 years old, you can imagine the headaches I would give my parents. My years in high school are when I discovered that I actually had some potential as a musician.

I sang in the choir, music festivals, learned how to play piano and guitar and picked up songwriting. I went on to become a background vocalist in 2019 for my classmate at the time, Nikita Kering’ and I learned quite a lot about the live music scene and artistry as a whole from her. In 2021 is when I got the chance to record my first song in studio and the year after I got signed to Universal Kenya. I’ve been singing and writing ever since,” she explains her music journey.

Although born and bred in Nairobi, the soulful vocals and captivating melodies, recently opened up about a life-changing experience that happened during a seemingly ordinary skating session. In a candid interview, she shared how a fall on the rink became a metaphor for resilience and overcoming challenges.

“My earliest and favorite childhood memory would be going to town for roller skating with my family on Sundays. We would go after church and have some lunch and ice cream on the side. What I didn’t love was falling in front of so many people over and over again,” she says.

This made her learn on her own so that when she goes to town on Sundays she would never embarrass herself again. She embarked on a  journey of becoming a pro and in the process she learnt what she says has been one of her main lessons in the industry.

“This thing taught me a hard lesson about life that no matter how many times life knocks you down, you have to get back up or else you won’t move, literally.”
